Camping Policy
Last updated: [14/04/2026]
This Camping Policy applies to all overnight events, wild camping trips, campsite stays, and any activities involving sleeping outdoors organised by Middle of Nowhere. By attending a camping event, you acknowledge and accept the terms outlined below.
Assumption of risk
Camping and overnight outdoor activities carry inherent risks. These include, but are not limited to, exposure to changing weather conditions, uneven terrain, wildlife encounters, fire hazards, equipment failure, and limited access to emergency services. By participating, you accept that these risks cannot be eliminated and that you take part entirely at your own risk.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Middle of Nowhere, its organisers, volunteers, and group leaders shall not be held liable for any injury, loss, damage, or expense suffered as a result of participation in camping activities. This includes, but is not limited to, personal injury, illness, environmental exposure, equipment failure, property damage, or loss arising during or as a result of an event.
Nothing in this policy excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so under UK law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
Personal responsibility
Participants are responsible for their own safety, wellbeing, and decision-making at all times. This includes:
• Bringing appropriate camping equipment suitable for the environment and weather conditions
• Ensuring tents and shelters are pitched safely and securely
• Managing food, hydration, and personal hygiene
• Making informed decisions about participation in activities based on personal ability and conditions
Participants must follow guidance from organisers and respect any safety instructions given during the event.
Equipment and belongings
You are solely responsible for your own equipment and personal belongings. Middle of Nowhere accepts no responsibility for loss, theft, damage, or misuse of personal items. You are responsible for ensuring your equipment is safe, functional, and suitable for use. This includes tents, stoves, cooking equipment, lighting, and sleeping gear.
Fire safety
Fires, stoves, and cooking equipment present significant risks. Participants must:
• Only use stoves or fires where permitted
• Keep flames controlled and attended at all times
• Maintain safe distances between tents and any heat source
• Fully extinguish all fires before leaving or sleeping
Failure to follow fire safety guidance may result in removal from the event.
Respect for others
Camping events are shared environments. Participants are expected to:
• Act respectfully towards others at all times
• Avoid behaviour that could put others at risk
• Keep noise levels reasonable, particularly during designated quiet hours
• Respect personal space and boundaries
Any behaviour that compromises the safety, comfort, or wellbeing of others may result in being asked to leave the event.
Environmental responsibility
Participants must follow a strict leave-no-trace approach:
• Take all litter and waste away with you
• Avoid damage to natural surroundings
• Use designated toilet facilities where available, or follow proper wild toileting practices
• Respect wildlife and livestock
Failure to follow environmental guidance may result in removal from the event.
Health and medical matters
You confirm that you are physically and medically fit to take part in camping activities. You are responsible for managing your own health conditions, medication, and wellbeing.
Middle of Nowhere is not responsible for any health issues that arise during or after the event.
Alcohol and substances
If alcohol is consumed, it must be done responsibly. Excessive consumption or behaviour that creates risk to yourself or others is not permitted.
The use of illegal substances is strictly prohibited.
Weather and conditions
Camping takes place in outdoor environments where conditions can change rapidly. Participants are responsible for preparing for adverse weather, including cold, rain, wind, and heat.
Events may be adjusted, postponed, or cancelled if conditions are deemed unsafe.
Third-party land and campsites
Camping may take place on public land, private land (with permission), or commercial campsites. Middle of Nowhere accepts no liability for the condition, safety, or management of these locations or any third-party facilities.
Emergency situations
In the event of an emergency, you consent to basic first aid being administered and, if necessary, emergency services being contacted. You are responsible for any associated costs.
Due to the nature of remote locations, emergency response times may be delayed.
